from Plum Village Practice Centers in Asia

Nov. 22 - Nov. 25, 2014 (Saturday to Tuesday)
At Chin Swee Caves Temple, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang

Sept 15, 2014

Dear friends,

You are invited to attend our annual family and young people mindfulness retreat to be held from Nov. 22 to Nov. 25, 2014 at Chin Swee Caves Temple, Genting Higland, Pahang. Families with children, young people and individuals are welcome to attend the retreat. The retreat has been the place for families to have open communication and their loving care expressed. Everyone has lots of fun along the way of transformation and healing. The parents and children enjoy just being themselves and being present for each other.

Parents and children will have separate as well as joint activities. The children, teens, young people and adults will be divided into groups according to their age: Children program: 6 to 12 years old, teen program: 13 to 16 years old, youths: 17 to 22 years old, and adults: 22 years old and up.  There are no separate programs for children under 6, and they have to be under full care of the parents.

The activities held in this family and young people retreat are similar to the ones offered in Plum Village France. We will learn and practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, and pleasant smiling; the foundation of the Plum Village tradition.  We will also practice deep listening and loving speech. By embodying these basic skills, we can offer our true presence to our loved ones, our children, and our parents.

In this retreat, we will study the Discourse on Happiness. We usually associate happiness with sensual desires: wealth, power, fame, sex, a lot of food and a lot of sleep. The discourse points out many simple things that we do in life are the sources of our happiness. For examples:

"To be able to serve and support your parents, to cherish your own family,
to have a vocation that brings you joy - this is the greatest happiness," or
" To be humble and polite in manner, to be grateful and content with a simple life,
not missing the occasion to learn the Dharma - this is the greatest happiness."

These things are very connected to us. Yet, we still feel that we don't have happiness. May be it is because we look for happiness outside of us, not from within.
