With the monks and nuns of Plum Village
from Plum Village Practice Centers in Asia

Nov. 21 - Nov. 24, 2013 (Thursday to Sunday)
At Chin Swee Caves Temple, 69000 Genting Highlands, Pahang

August 1, 2013

Dear friends,

You are invited to attend our annual family and young people mindfulness retreat to be held from Nov. 21 to Nov. 24, 2013 at Chin Swee Caves Temple, Genting Higland, Pahang. Families with children, young people and individuals are welcome to attend the retreat. The retreat has been the place for families to have open communication and their loving care expressed. Everyone has lots of fun along the way of transformation and healing. The parents and children enjoy just being themselves and being present for each other.

Parents and children will have separate as well as joint activities. The children, teens, young people and adults will be divided into groups according to their age: Children program: 6 to 12 years old, teen program: 13 to 16 years old, youths: 17 to 22 years old, and adults: 22 years old and up.  There are no separate programs for children under 6, and they have to be under full care of the parents.

The activities held in this family and young people retreat are similar to the ones offered in Plum Village France. We will learn and practice mindful breathing, mindful walking, and pleasant smiling; the foundation of the Plum Village tradition.  We will also practice deep listening and loving speech. By embodying these basic skills, we can offer our true presence to our loved ones, our children, and our parents.

In this retreat, we will study the Four Noble Truths and the Noble Eightfold Path and its applications in modern life. In the first teaching after his enlightenment at Deer Park Grove, the Buddha said that there was suffering (dukkha), as well as happiness (sukkha) in life. The main cause of our suffering is our ignorance, of not being able to see things the ways they really are, and thus get caught in the duality point of view, such as birth/death, coming/going, being/non-being, suffering/happiness ... By having Right View, we realize that peace and happiness is present and possible in our daily life. We realize that impermanence makes life possible ? children grow to become adults, garbage can be transformed to compost, soy beans can be made to soymilk; and thanks to impermanence, suffering can be transformed to joy.
